Public relations defined by Wikopedia deals with influencing public opinion, through the presentation of a client's image, message, or product. Public relations agents or "officials" deliver info to the media or directly to the public to convey messages toward wider audiences, or to specific demographic segments within the public, called "target audiences." PR may target different audiences with different messages to achieve an overall goal. Public relations can affect widespread opinion and behavior change.
• Public relations activities include helping the public to understand the company and its products. Often, public relations are conducted through the media, which is, newspapers, television, magazines, etc.
• Events, such as company release parties are a great way to get buzz stirring, and a good way to invite the media to attend.
• Speaking engagements are another good way to have your voice heard, physically. These give you the opportunity to speak to a large crowd and have them focus on your words and presentation, intensely. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase yourself as well as your business.
• The idea behind successful promotions is to think big, and think often.
• Spread the word to peers, professional organizations and those with whom you interact outside the organizations, e.g., educators, consultants, suppliers, clients, etc.
• Gift-giving creates a favorable impression. It can build goodwill, be an incentive, communicate a message and create awareness. Your giveaway items should be designed to increase the memorability, communicate, motivate, promote or increase recognition. It is important not only that the messages have an impact, but also the premium itself, says Susan Friedmann.
• Special events -- These tend to attract attention, and can include, e.g., an open house, granting a special award, announcing a major program or service or campaign, etc.
• You're probably an expert at something. Find ways to give even short presentations, for example, at local seminars, Chamber of Commerce meetings, trade shows, conventions, seminars, etc. It's amazing that one can send out 500 brochures and be lucky to get 5 people who respond. Yet, you can give a presentation to 30 people and 15 of them will be very interested in staying in touch with you.
