Nintendo's new game console previously code-named Revolution, it is now called Wii (pronounced "we").The new name has been received with mixed feelings by specialist media and gaming enthusiasts.
"While the code-name Revolution expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer," spokeswoman Perrin Kaplan told Reuters.
The console's website contains a Flash presentation explaining why Nintendo chose this particular name.
"Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak," the site explains.
"Wii sounds like 'we', which emphasises this console is for everyone."
Key features of the console include a one-handed controller that looks like a remote control and the use of motion-detection sensors, which allow players to control the game in different ways.
They can wield the controller like a sword, swing it like a cricket bat or wave it like a conductor's baton.
Although the company has not set a release date for its new product, the Wii is expected to hit the shelves later this year.
Microsoft pioneered the next-generation consoles with the launch of the Xbox 360 in late 2005.
Sony's new PlayStation 3 is due in November, after having its release date postponed for technical reasons.
While the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 focus on powerful processors and high-definition graphics, Nintendo's Wii will try to appeal to the broadest audience possible.
